Weddings: Reception Considerations
By J. A. Young
Choosing a reception site is one of the biggest wedding
considerations couples will face as they plan their big day. The following
article discusses a wide array of factors that must be addressed before settling
on a venue.
The number of guests a site can accommodate is probably one
of the easiest ways to narrow down reception sites. Some banquet halls are
simply too small to suit substantial parties. Some up-scale hotels will not
accommodate young children which can be a major sticky point. Once the guest
list is firm, couples can simply call venues to see what numbers they can
accommodate for the date in question.
Next, address the food concerns. Some halls require that
outside caterers handle the meal. This is fine, but it may be easier to find a
hall that does it all. Many reception centers offer couples the chance to dine
in order to sample the faire. This is a great way to help narrow down choices
for halls as well. Additionally, sometimes children-friendly meals can be
purchased for reduced rates.
It’s also important to find out whether chairs and tables
will be supplied along with linens and decorations. Frequently, there will be
additional charges if these features are needed. Hotels generally include
these arrangements in their pricing. Still, find out about decorations. You
may want something a bit more unique for your table centerpieces than a simple
rose in a standard glass vase. Find out about what options you have when it
comes to décor.
Alcohol is another consideration. Some venues do not allow
it and others may insist that you supply your own. Be sure to find out if the
venue has a bar and how it will be staffed.
Next, find out how each site accommodates your entertainment
choice. Is there a stage for a live band and proper wiring and equipment? How
big is the dance floor? Space for dancing and dining elbow room can be a
considerable factor for choosing one venue over another. More and more hotels
are also offering options for children. For example, a room off the ballroom
might feature a large-screen television for viewing movies.
Couples may also want to check out whether the prospective
venue offers a coat room with an attendant. Find out about parking
arrangements too. Time is also a big consideration. How many hours will your
guests be allowed to remain?
Many reception sites offer multiple rooms for celebrations.
This is a turn-off for many couples who prefer not to share their big day with
other couples and groups. Multiple receptions may lead to parking issues,
excessive noise / commotion, or lines at the rest rooms.
While the overall look and atmosphere of a venue will play
an important role, there are many other considerations to keep in mind.
Chandeliers may not impress your guests as much as a good meal, for instance.
Because this is such an important day and choosing a venue
incurs such considerable expense, it is important to know everything up front
in order to make the best decision for you and your guests.
